South Korea is taking a significant step towards a sustainable future, advancing ambitious plans for the development of a clean hydrogen economy. This initiative is a crucial part of the country's efforts to transition to renewable energy sources, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and enhance energy security.
According to Platts (S&P Global Energy), South Korea plans to hold a large auction for clean hydrogen-based energy in the second half of 2026. Through this auction, contracts will be concluded for 500 GWh of clean hydrogen energy, which will serve to attract significant investments into the sector.
Furthermore, the country is implementing large green hydrogen production projects with a capacity of up to 100 MW on Jeju Island and in coastal areas. To support the hydrogen economy, the construction of liquefied hydrogen plants, logistics centers, and pipelines is also planned. These infrastructure projects will ensure the large-scale production, storage, and distribution of hydrogen.
These strategic steps will help South Korea take a leading position in the global clean energy market, develop new, sustainable industrial sectors, and make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
